Read James 5:1-6
“The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty” (James 5:4).
What Does This Scripture Mean for Us?
Is it WRONG or sinful to be rich?
Funny how almost all of us feel about wealth or riches. Those folks who have little money and/or
material possessions, tend to feel cautious about wealth and distrust the wealthy. Those folks who
are “well off” or downright rich, tend to justify their wealth as something they’ve earned or are
entitled to.
And the really “funny” part of all this is: If the poor gain wealth, they treat it just as those they previously distrusted — while rich folks who suffer loss and become poor often change their thinking, too.
Read these verses carefully. God is NOT condemning wealth itself — God is condemning wealthy people
who fail to help those in need and/or act in a haughty or arrogant fashion with their money.
Rich or poor, we must reflect God’s love by loving and helping others always and in every way
that we can.

Read James 4:1-12
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).
What Does This Scripture Mean for Us?
What happens in your mind if I say to you, “Don’t think about a white elephant”? You immediately picture a white elephant, don’t you? You can’t help it.
Now what if I say to you, “Picture a pink rose”? Unless you’ve never seen a rose before or the
color pink, you form an image of a pink rose.
James puts temptation and the devil’s work in our lives in the same perspective when he says
FIRST we are to submit to God, THEN we are to resist the devil.
Don’t get that mixed up. Just as the old sports cliche says “the best defense is a good offense,”
so, too, the best way to resist the devil is NOT to focus on resisting the devil — but to focus on devoting ourselves to God!

Read James 3:13-18
“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom” (James 3:13).
What Does This Scripture Mean for Us?
To my embarrassment, I have to say this: I’ve personally known SEVERAL pastors and Bible college instructorswho have been anything but humble and wise.
Now that simply ought not to be. There is absolutely no excuse for a Christian leader of any kind being
arrogant, condescending, or having any sort of “attitude.”
Yet it happens. It happens to ALL of us at one time or another as we go through this life — simply because we are human as well as “partakers of the divine nature” through our relationship with God in Christ.
Which is to say this: Let’s all work on it today. May those folks who live in our world see this genuine, godly wisdom, characterized by good deeds done in humility.
Pretty good goal for the day, don’t you think?
